(oh look, I have gone and broke it now)
Wait...there is more than violence and breasts? *grins*
(sorry about the name..this is Jena..I wanted to change my name on one blog, and *poof* it changed it for them all. I don't really mean to be this annoying.)
This reminds me of a funny little story, was at the mall today with my mum. We walked by a store that sells video games, and in the window was a poster for this game. It featured this anime looking chick with big breasts, a tight outfit and a big gun. Causing me to say, quite outloud. "Why can't I be a cute anime babe, with big boobs and a gun". Which in turned, caused the guys outside playing the N64 to stop and stare.
Speaking of Sakura....after visting this site I think I may have to look into this title. (I was assured by Caroline it was not as bad as Sailor Moon)

Sakura! Sakura! You need to expose those boys to something other than violence and breasts 'Chelle! Hmmm... ever consider showing them some yaoi? *evil grin* Bet THAT would scar them for life. Mwuahahah. And I rather liked the Utena movie. I thought it was better than the series. It made more sense, yet at the same time made less sense. Or something... bah. I just can't explain it.

I showed the Utena movie to my anime club tonight. I believe one guy's response was "I'm now scarred for life." Well . . . I said it was fucked up (although, I had forgotten quite how bad it was). I prefer the series to the movie but the movie does have some of the most incredible animation I've ever seen. I could watch the scene of Utena and Anthy dancing on the stars over and over again.I wonder how the guys will survive the disgusting cuteness of the Card Captor Sakura movie next week? Have I ever mentioned I love CLAMP? :)

I am suffering from serious withdrawl. My father is not really fond of anime, and generally has control over the tv all day. I plan on one of these days when he is on the computer, pulling out some of the movies I managed to get from the apartment. Have myself a little movie fest. I just wish the video store carried tapes, I haven't already seen. (*sigh*)congrats on getting the icon code up, it looks very cool!

Well, I just put in the code so that each one of us can have our own little icon to identify us. Hopefully it will work. I'm Sana-chan from Kodomo no Omocha, Caroline is Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura, Jena is Wufei from Gundam Wing and since Kristen didn't give me an icon she was assigned the chibispawn . . . er, Chibiusa.

Hey, blogger's actually working today. ^_^Ok, I'm suffering from some serious anime withdrawl. I practically doubled my collection this summer and now have finally finished watching everything. So... now what? Are you girls suffering from the same thing? (Don't answer that, Kristen. You've not watched half of what you have. ^_^)
And speaking of languages, are you girls like me, whenever you hear someone speaking Japanese on TV or whatever, you can kinda translate what they're saying. It's eerie. I really wish there was somewhere around here where I could learn the language. *sigh*

I have to agree partially with the "think it sounds cool" theory. As well as throwing in my own theory of target audience. Perhaps they are under the impression they will get, and keep more of an English audience by doing this.
On a different, yet slightly related issue....
Imagine my chagrin, when I decided to watch an episode of Sailor Moon (yes i think I *was* illl), and heard such phrases as "fly", "buggin" and other vernacular that I think needs to be destroyed. Little girls or not, I think it is digusting to make characters that are supposed to be so intelligent and special, sound like total idiots.

You know, one of the oddest things about anime is how they burst into occasional English phrases in the middle of series (especially magical girl anime). They use a lot of music with English lyrics too. I'm listening to the second Initial D soundtrack now and all but the last song is in English. I'm not complaining . . . I mean, I actually understand the lyrics. I just think it's odd. Anyone have any theories besides "They think it sounds cool" (former anime club president).Anyone?

Humm, an anime channel would be wonderful. I've heard rumors that Cartoon Network was thinking about doing a Toonami channel. Doubtless it would all be dubbed stuff though :( And they'd still have to probably cut it into pieces. Oh well...it'd be anime :)As for explaining my love of anime to people . . . I've never seriously had to explain it. The few cases I had to I just said that I've always loved animation and I love anime because, unlike American animation, it has actual plots (wellll....usually). I think a lot of people have bad opinions of anime because they think of it as either animated porn (hentai) or huge bloodbaths. Take my experience with my anime club: A few weeks ago we had a reporter from the school newspaper come to one of our meetings to do a story on it. At the meeting we had about fifty minutes of an anime series called Beserk (terribly, horribly bloody) and the rest was mainly comedy (Kodomo no Omocha, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, etc.). When the article came out Beserk was the main focus of it and the article turned into this commentary on how anime is all bloody and violent (despite the fact that we mentioned many times there were as many types of anime as there are movies in the U.S.). I could go on about how the reporter chick was totally unprofessional but I won't. What I will say is that when people in the U.S. see anime, they come from the conception that animation is for children, so when they see anime with blood in it it's such a shock to their senses they can focus on nothing else and so they have a bad opinion of anime and anime fans. At least that's my theory.
And I must say, I can't believe anyone's so rude as to say something like that. You should have said "I don't see why you people have to judge something you haven't even watched. Oh, and fuck off, moron." :)

I have a question for you girls, because this is something I have to do often. Do you find it annoying to have to explain why you love anime so much? Do you have an answer? Some stranger came up behind me in the video store today, and bluntly said, in a nasty tone. "I don't know what *you* people see in that". You people? Are we some alien beings, or lepers or something? I was offended, I told them to f**k off.
Maybe this is because I am in a small town, chalk it up to that, but I don't know. Do you guys have this problem?
