Miyazaki Hayao Movie Doujinshi

Miyazaki Hayao is one of my favorite directors of all time. The quality of his movies is amazing; the background detail makes it easy to forget you're watching animation. The stories are complex without losing their charm, suitable for adults and children alike. Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite movies, animated or live action. I also love Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

If you haven't seen any of his movies, go watch them. Now. They're amazing. I can't wait to see his version of Howl's Moving Castle, one of my favorite fantasy books.

While doujinshi for Miyazaki's movies aren't extremely popular, I've still managed to collect several. Spirited Away is easier to find since it's a more recent movie, although I've found two Princess Mononoke ones and one Nausicaa doujinshi.

I'll only say this one more time. Go watch his movies. Now.

Title: Amber the Spirit
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: SanGatsuKan
Art: B+
Rating: G
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 24

Other Info:
Published in August, 2001. Comic. This is a pretty good doujinshi. The art is quite good and there are some wonderful drawings. The comic is fairly short and there are several short four panel gag stories. A fairly good doujinshi if you like Sen to Chihirio. The story has a bit of Haku angsting over Sen.

Title: Amber the Spirit 2
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: SanGatsuKan
Art: B+
Rating: G
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 24

Other Info:
Published in November, 2001. Again, fairly good art. There are some really cute scenes with Haku and again, some Haku angst. Haku is pretty -- although I think he and Akira from Hikaru no Go must be related. They both have green hair after all ...

Title: Amber the Spirit 3
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: SanGatsuKan
Art: B+
Rating: G
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 24

Other Info:
Published in February, 2002. This one is more comic than the other two, both of which have a lot of short gag stories. This one has a funny one though -- Haku meets a couple of people on the bridge to the bath house who are carrying "Comic Market" bags and he is horrified. It's cute.

Title: Amber the Spirit 4
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: SanGatsuKan
Art: B+
Rating: G
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 24

Other Info:
Published in March, 2002. Good art makes this doujinshi worth buying. Another thing that makes this doujinshi worth buying is the amusing "Lord of the Amber" picture, where Haku is apparently Frodo. So is the really cute Haku/Sen scene which I refuse to spoil. The one thing that made me sad about Sen to Chihiro is that Haku and Sen couldn't stay together ...

Title: Tachi Machi Tsuki no Yoru (Stand, Wait, Night of the Moon)
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: Caribbean Sexy.
Art: B-
Rating: PG
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 68

Other Info:
Published on August 9, 2002. The art for this doujinshi isn't the best: not bad, not great. The comic itself is mainly gag stories with one very short, but very cute, serious story set after Chihiro leaves. Haku and Chihiro make such a cute couple.

Title: Sugar
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: Caribbean Sexy
Art: B-
Rating: PG
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 40

Other Info:
Published on March 17, 2002. The art in this doujinshi is decent, slightly above average, but not spectacular. The story is a bit confusing; I think in one section No-Face is jealous of Haku and another is the beginning of Yubaba's bird attack on Haku.

Title: Utage (Banquet)
Movie: Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Circle: Anthology (several circles)
Art: B/C
Rating: PG
Pairing: Haku/Sen
Number of Pages: 78

Other Info:
Published on March 17, 2002. This is a Haku/Sen anthology style doujinshi. There are about three circles with B art and the rest are C. Several of the stories are quite cute, so this is a doujinshi worth buying.

Title: Makaze (Pure Wind -- maybe)
Movie: Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke)
Circle: green company & Misuzudo
Art: A/C
Rating: PG
Pairing: none
Number of Pages: 24

Other Info:
Published on August 11, 2001. There are two very short comic sections in this doujinshi. One of them is done by Green Company and has pretty good art. The other one by Misuzudo has okay art but Ashitaka looks quite weird. The rest of the doujinshi is sketches and commentary.

Title: Ouji Mononoke (Prince Mononoke)
Movie: Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke)
Circle: Rascal Gundan
Art: B+/C
Rating: PG
Pairing: Ashitaka/San
Number of Pages: 36

Other Info:
Published on September 21, 1997. This is a decent Mononoke doujinshi. There are several quite nice single picture drawings in this book. Alas, there's also a small section that has quite mediocre art. Scenes seem to focus on several "unseen" moments in the movie.
